Oil Painting Workshops: Realism

                              Spring 2007

In late 2006, I had the opportunity to spend some time with a modern day master, John Stobart. John had, at one time, a painting series on PBS. He explains things in a way that is clearly understandable for me. I have put some of this information into practice and am thrilled with the results. In these upcoming workshops this spring I hope to share, in a way that is understandable, all of the tidbits that John so graciously offered to me.

For those who have attended my workshops before, I welcome you back for more studies in the visual observation arena, this time less about color and more about identifying values and the use of edges. In preparation for these workshops, I have designed a still-life composition that you will paint, using twenty values that you will learn to mix yourself. I projected the image onto a specially made wood panel that you'll paint using the same brushes that are used by masters today. When using a value range this great, you will automatically push your sensitivity to limits beyond that which most students work with.

For any newcomers, I will welcome you and I can promise a challenging visual workout that is the basis for all realistic painting.
